The Gothenburg or simply the Goth is a community run pub in the village of Fallin By Stirling. Don’t be fooled by the name. These pubs have nothing to do with sombre people dressed in black. Instead, they are named after a system developed in Sweden. The Scottish Goth pubs were found in pit towns and their aim was to discourage heavy drinking and funnel 95% of their profits back into their local community.
At one stage, there were as many as 50 Goth pubs in SCotland but now there are only four left that stick to the Gothenburg system.
The Fallin Goth has had a long history of providing for the village of Fallin which developed around the local colliery (Polmaise pits 3 & 4) in the early 20th Century.
Back before the NHS, the Goth paid for a nurse and a doctor.
Another ethos of a Goth pub was to provide alternatives to drinking. The bowling green was opened next door to the Goth in 1911. It is still used to this day.
The Goth also provided night school lesson for miners to try and better themselves and a library which would be open to anyone in the community.
During a trip to Scotland, The Prince and Princess of Wales visited the Goth in Fallin.
